Carousel
Prague Quadrennial 2023
This Summer I had the privilege to not only attend, but also exhibit my artwork as a student at the 2023 Prague Quadrennial. For one of the two hanging installations I was tasked with creating I had complete freedom to design whatever I wanted within the size and weight limitations. The concept of a carousel stood out to me as both a practical shape as well as something I have a personal connection to, as I have enjoyed many old carousels while travelling as a kid. The modified carousel holds four figurines, a carpenter, a lighting and sound technician, a prop builder, and a costume designer, representing the branches of scenography and the people behind the scenes of performance. hanging from the carousel sits a performer ‘supported’ by the scenographers. The piece, made with both new and recycled materials, posed many structural and functional challenges, such as frequent handling by the public, being displayed outside for two weeks, and needing to be transported in my luggage and assembled with few resources and little time. I am very proud of the end product, and believe success was only achieved through careful planning and support from my peers and parents.
